One hundred years after the 1918 Armistice, the shadow of the First World War hangs over many of the BBC Proms this summer — and dominates the opening night. The first half comprises two works written during or just after the 1914-18 conflict: Gustav Holst’s The Planets, with its brutal Mars movement widely thought to have been a depiction of mechanised warfare; and Toward the Unknown Region, Ralph Vaughan Williams’s setting of Walt Whitman. It’s in the second half, however, that the BBC Symphony Orchestra and several youth ensembles will themselves move into an “unknown region”.
