Summer Cinema offers $1 movies, free popcorn

Heres a chance to see animated movies this summer with free popcorn.

Summer Cinema returns to the Don Gibson Theatre in Shelby during June, July and August. Seven movies will be shown, one each Thursday. Admission is $1 per person for each movie and $1 soft drinks are available.

Some of the movies were released last year, including Coco, Cars 3, Despicable Me 3, and Smurfs: The Lost Village. Others are classics, such as 1967s The Jungle Book and 1997s Hercules.

The showings are at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. for each movie on the date its scheduled. The Don Gibson Theatre hosts live entertainment throughout the year, but the building was originally a movie theater.

Executive Director Stan Lowery said he remembers watching The Jungle Book at the theatre when he was 6 or 7 years old. He hopes the movies this summer build memories for children watching.

I lived on Dekalb Street and walked across Dekalb. Mom would bring us and drop us off at the movies. Back then it was like a dollar to get in, too, Lowery said.

He said the morning movie times allow children in day care, church groups and summer camps to attend. The evening show times are popular with families.

This is a way that we can build memories for kids and families. A lot of folks, this is the only chance theyll get to come to the theater. They just dont take in concerts, Lowery said. This is another aspect that will get them another good experience in Shelby and at the Don Gibson Theatre.
