Brandi Carlile launching Girls Just Wanna Weekend, a Mexico ‘concert vacation’ with all-female lineup

Music fans and artists have bemoaned the dearth — or in some cases complete lack — of women headlining major festivals for years. The good people of the internet have been quick to point out how those festival posters would look minus all the dudes.

Apparently, our hometown folk-country queen Brandi Carlile has a rebuttal that’s better than any doctored flyer. On Thursday, Carlile announced that she’s launching a destination concert experience in Mexico “celebrating women in rock and roll.” Carlile’s “all-inclusive concert vacation” — dubbed Girls Just Wanna Weekend — will take over the Hard Rock Hotel in the Riviera Maya from Jan. 30 through Feb. 3, 2019.

“Girls Just Wanna Weekend is something I’m really proud of,” Carlile wrote on her website. “These past few years I’ve really been noticing the exclusion of women at the top of mainstream festival lineups. This is a weekend holiday in Mexico celebrating women in rock and roll.”

According to the announcement, the lineup for the four-night bash will be unveiled next Wednesday. Details are still slim, but sounds like it will be a family friendly affair (“Bring your kids — I’m bringing mine!” she writes), plentifully stocked with tequila. While the event puts the spotlight on women who rock, “men and women and anyone in between” are welcome to attend.

With all that sunshine (and perhaps a little tequila), we’ve got to imagine that Carlile will be in as good of a mood as she was rocking Seattle’s Moore Theatre this spring. During the first of what was supposed to be a two-night stand, the folksy charmer was clearly having a ball as she turned the elegant theater into an intimate barn party. Unfortunately, Carlile wound up rescheduling the following night’s show to care for her sick child. The makeup show takes place Sept. 1.
