Box Office Buzz – June 14, 2018

Hello Movie Maniacs!  For Father’s Day weekend, how about a sequel to a fun family film?

New in theaters this weekend:
INCREDIBLES 2 (WALT DISNEY STUDIOS)!  This time around, Mr. Incredible is left to care for Jack-Jack while Elastigirl is out saving the world. Typical – LOL!  Vocal stylings of Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson and so many more are back.  Director Brad Bird had stated over the years, he would only do a sequel to the 2004 hit if he could come up with a story that’s just as good or better than the original.  Well, he must be proud of this one!  If you’re keeping track – there are some records here:, this is Pixar’s 20th feature film.  At one-hour-fifty-eight minutes, this is not only the longest PIXAR film to date, but also the longest computer-animated feature to date.  And, the first to have a very minor profanity.

If you’re feeling a bit more grown up, well, sort of, how about TAG (WARNER BROS.) – A small group of former classmates organize an elaborate, annual game of tag that requires some to travel all over the country.  Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, along with Isla Fisher, Leslie Bibb and Rashida Jones star.  This film is based on the true events in the lives of four former high school classmates – as teens during the 1980s, they would entertain themselves by playing the schoolyard game during breaks at prep school in Spokane, Washington.

Tops at the box office last weekend:
OCEAN’S 8 steals the top spot!  What a SUPER fast, fun, witty ride with these eight lovely ladies.  I love Sandra Bullock so much.  What a great ring-leader for this heist flick!  Seems like these chicks can definitely run with the boys in the earning money department!  I highly recommend for a great escape!   SOLO:  A STAR WARS STORY AND DEADPOOL 2 are at number two and three.  DEBUTING at number four is HEREDITARY.  This is the wild sort of scary movie starring Toni Collette about a family unraveling after the death of her mother.  HEREDITARY smashed expectations to finish in the top five earning A24 its largest opening EVER.  I can tell you, this movie is NOT for everyone and it’s STILL puzzling me to what I actually SAW!  And, AVENGERS;  INFINITY WAR rounds out the top 5!  Just a quick mention of a movie debuting at number eight … HOTEL ARTEMIS starring Jodie Foster who runs a members only ER for criminals is way under promoted!  It’s super slick with GREAT performances!!!

Brand new on Blu-Ray this week
TOMB RAIDER (WARNER BROS.) – Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she discovers the island where her father disappeared.  This time around, Alicia Vikander is Croft.  I admit I was a bit skeptical at first as I LOVED Angelina Jolie in the role originally.  I will have to say, TOMB RAIDER is super full of action and super fun to watch and Vikander does a fantastic job in the role of Croft!Locally:
The OUTDOOR MOVIES AT FOUNDERS PARK in Downtown Springfield are ON!  Friday night is date night this week with WONDER, which was in my TOP 5 of 2017!  And, Saturday night is THOR: RAGNOROK, Chris Hemsworth is in my TOP all the time!  Movies begin at sundown … ADMISSION IS FREE!  Much more info and to see the Summer schedule go to parkboard-dot-org/movies!
